On a drizzly Sunday morning at Finchley RFC, Southgate U9s displayed grit and skill in a thrilling contest, emerging victorious with a 60-45 win over Finchley. Despite a slow start, where Finchley capitalised on home advantage to score early, Southgate found their footing, spurred by some brilliant individual moments and cohesive team play.

The match opened with Finchley scoring first, but Southgate soon responded, with Olivia Joannides demonstrating sharp vision to set up Kerem Ibrahim, who bulldozed his way over the try line, levelling the score at 5-5. Finchley’s defence initially held strong, forcing Southgate into errors, but Southgate's tenacity shone through. A stunning tackle from Priam Eden and Olivia halted a Finchley charge, while Ultan Ross and Connor Langan turned the tide with back-to-back tries down the left wing, putting Southgate in the driving seat.

Luke Ewing’s introduction off the bench brought an injection of energy, as he and James piled the pressure on Finchley’s defence. Archie Goldsmith, replacing the powerful running Max Mead, darted down the right, setting up James for another key score, helping Southgate end the half ahead 25-15.

As the rain intensified in the second half, Finchley struck quickly, but Southgate responded in kind. Luke Ewing was all over the pitch having his best game in a Southgate shirt. Kerem was unstoppable, scoring two rapid tries to complete his hat trick, thanks to Harry Mackman’s pinpoint pass through Finchley’s midfield. Finchley, however, weren’t done, closing the gap with two quick tries of their own.

With the score tightening, Southgate’s captain, Max, rallied his team into a solid defensive formation. Harry’s relentless running, coupled with Gruff Rozansky’s powerful support play, kept Southgate on the front foot. Priam capped off a team try, showcasing great interplay with Eden, Archie, and Harry.

As the game neared its conclusion, Harry scored his maiden try, stretching Southgate’s lead, but Finchley responded once more with a late score. It wasn’t enough to prevent Southgate from sealing an exciting 60-45 win, a game that promises a bright future for both teams.
